REGULATIONS on the establishment of the branch Baksan Neutrino Observatory (BNO INR RAS)
Brief history of the Baksan Neutrino Observatory INR RAS
The BNO was created in 1973 and is the experimental base of the Institute, where research is carried out in the field of physics of the atomic nucleus, elementary particles, cosmic ray physics and neutrino astrophysics. This is the world's first large-scale underground laboratory, which includes a set of complementary unique installations for interdisciplinary research at the intersection of fundamental physics, astrophysics and geophysics. It is located in the Elbrus region (Kabardino-Balkaria), consists of a complex of underground structures located along two parallel horizontal adits in the thickness of Mount Andyrchi (the height of the mountain is over 4 km; the length of the adits is about 4 km), and a complex of ground laboratories.
The creation of the observatory is inextricably linked with the names of such famous scientists as M.A. Markov, A.N. Tavkhelidze, V.A. Matveev, A.E. Chudakov, G.T. Zatsepin, A.A. Pomansky et al.
Alexander Aleksandrovich Pomansky (1932-1993), professor, doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, was appointed the first head. He made a great contribution to the creation and development of the Baksan Neutrino Observatory and headed it until 1993.
Until 1999, the Baksan Neutrino Observatory was headed by Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Evgeniy Nikolaevich Alekseev (1940-2021). With his direct participation, the large research installations “Carpet” and the Baksan underground scintillation telescope were built and put into physical operation.
From 1999 to 2020, the Observatory was headed by Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Valery Vasilievich Kuzminov. A world-famous experimental physicist in the field of research of rare processes using gas detectors under conditions of low background natural radioactivity and cosmic rays in the underground laboratories of the BNO. He made a great personal contribution to the creation of one of the best underground low-background laboratory in the world.
Since 2020, the branch has been headed by Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Valery Borisovich Petkov.
